Domestic Violence and Mental Health Conference - 11th September

Inspire Hackney event (22 September) bringing together Hackney communities

This email asks for your help in bringing our communities together to ‘Inspire Hackney’, a half day event on 22 September. We are also keen to encourage more people to get involved in Hackney Unites, so if you like what we do, why not get involved (see below for more details)?

You can help in several ways:
  • Register to attend the Inspire Hackney event, visit: http://inspirehackney.eventbrite.co.uk/
  • Forward this email on to people you think will be interested in the event
  • Post a link on your facebook, or twitter page

Hackney Unites community newspaper
To mark a year since last August’s riots, and to publicise the Inspire Hackney event, we will be producing a special edition of our community newspaper. The free newspaper is written by local people about campaign, arts and community issues that they care about. Please, drop us an email if you can help distribute copies in your street or estate, or through your community networks.

The paper will be available from week commencing 20 August and we literally need dozens of people to distribute copies in their part of the borough and through their networks. In the past it has been distributed through door to door delivery, in community centres, libraries, doctors surgeries, some sympathetic newsagents and in hairdressers. Let us know if you can help with distribution: email hackneyunites@btinternet.com

What is Inspire Hackney all about?
Just over a year on from last August's riot, it is time for us, as a community, to reflect on where we are, and what steps we need to take as a community.
Inspire Hackney will be part art, part workshops and a lot of fun. Working with a range of partner organisations, we will take the time to explore what community organising is and how it can help us to address issues such as:
  • Trade unions and communities: can they work together to effect change? A discussion of a three continent research project and its implications for Hackney
  • Together for Transport: organising a public transport users group for Hackney
  • Hackney Unemployed Workers Group: organising the unemployed in Hackney
  • TSSA: Community learning: what it is and how it works?
  • Hackney Borough of Sanctuary: how can we make Hackney a place of welcome to refugees and migrants
  • 'Digs': challenging bad practice in the private rented housing sector
  • Youth and policing (Stop and search)
  • A forum on the environment
