Meetings, leafleting and organising‏

With the Greater London Mayor and Assembly elections less than a week away, we are holding our ‘hustings’ meeting on Sunday evening at 7pm at the Arcola Theatre, Ashwin Street. We have the four leading candidates for the North East London constituency who will be answering questions from local residents.

Next Tuesday mornging we will be distributing HOPE not hate leaflets at tube and rail stations across the borough getting the message out to Hackney people: you need to vote if you want to keep the BNP from getting a seat in City Hall (they need just 5% of votes cast to win a seat).

Time to reflect
It has been a hectic time recently with a lot of activity (and 40,000 newspapers delivered across the borough) so on 9 May we are planning a less formal open meeting for our supporters. This will be an opportunity to reflect on recent successes, and to explore new initiatives.  Perhaps most important it will be an opportunity to get to ‘meet and greet’ new supporters who have helped out in our campaigns.
If you are planning to attend any of the above events, please help us by completing a short on-line survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/PNRRSB2

Other News
We are working hard to promote our unemployed workers group and their  one day conference on 28 June (more details: huuwproject@gmail.com) and our new Private Sector Tenants initiative (see http://hackneyunites.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/are-yo-private-tenant-in-hackney-get.htmlfor more details.

Anti-Human trafficking seminar - Woodbery Down Baptist Church

A message from Woodberry Down Baptist Church...

Dear All,

I want to let you know we are hosting a seminar Tuesday 8th May at 7pm here at Woodberry Down on the subject of anti human trafficking - specifically women trafficking!

The speakers, Amy and Jenny are part of the YWAM megacities campaign in London this year - for more information about the speakers - resume is attached.

Amy Garis and Jenny Ellis work with the ministry, Priceless, in Perth, Australia (which Jenny started and leads). Jenny has been in Youth with a Mission for over 2 decades, while Amy has been a part of Youth with a Mission for about 10 years. Both have extensive training through major organisations in the area of ending human trafficking and reaching out to prostitutes. Jenny has been instrumental in helping to develop a city wide strategy against Human Trafficking in Perth, while Amy has a lot of experience working to reach prostitutes in countries such as Australia, the United States, South Africa and Holland.

Their focus through their seminars will be to help the faith/community groups to engage and develop strategies to answer the problem of prostitution and human trafficking. We've met many in London who are aware of prostitution going on in their area, but don't know how to help, some even find the challenge overwhelming. Amy and Jenny are an excellent resource to help churches and communities find practical, simple ways to reach out and show the love of Christ to those involved in prostitution.

They will be coming to London three times this year. Their first trip is to hold seminars to help bring awareness and develop practical ideas to get involved at a local community level. They arrive at the end of this month and are available for seminars from the 26th of April to the 10th of May

Their second trip will be around the Olympic period where they will seek to draw together interested people they meet during their first trip, to have an outreach experience in local communities. Jenny and Amy would then come back later to help further equip those who want to develop long term ministries.

Please let me know if you will be able to attend and of any other community groups we can invite to the seminar.

Kind regards

Charles Mugenyi

Let's get the Hackney vote out‏

HOPE Not Hate
Dear Supporter,

With the Greater London Assembly election little more than three weeks away, we are mobilising across London to get the anti-BNP vote out.

To keep the BNP off the Greater London Assembly, we need 19 anti-BNP votes for every one they receive.

In Hackney the BNP do not get many votes, but the problem historically there has been a low turnout. We are working closely with the community organisation Hackney Unites to get the vote out and there are two ways in which you can help.

We are half way through delivering 40,000 copies of the HOPE not hate/Hackney Unites tabloid newspaper, already 100 local people have been involved in distribution, but there are still plenty more to deliver.

If you can take some, to distribute in your street, or through local community outlets (shops, cafes, hairdressers, community centres, places of worship, workplaces, etc. then please sign up at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/97TLDLJ

Holding politicians to account

Of course it is not good enough to just say ‘vote for anyone, but the BNP’, we need to re-engage our communities with the political process. That is why, in Hackney we are working with Hackney Unites to stage a ‘hustings’ meeting where the leading candidates for the local GLA constituency will be asked questions from the public about their policies. If enough people turn out, then we hope that whoever gets elected they will feel obliged to respond to the local communities’ concerns.

The event is at the Arcola Theatre on Ashwin Street, from 7pm to 9pm on Sunday 29 April. You can help us make this event a success, by registering to attend, (http://glahustings.eventbrite.com/) and by promoting it via your networks and on facebook, and twitter etc.

Hackney has its problems, but it is a multi-cultural success story. By bringing people together, both against the BNP, but also for the communities of Hackney, we can show that we genuinely have the ‘vision of HOPE’ that can defeat the politics of hatred.

Thanks

East London Green Jobs Alliance - build your future

Tuesday, April 10, 2012

A thank you, an ask, a job and your views‏

  • Updates you on the distribution of our latest community newspaper
  • Asks you to register to attend our hustings meeting on 29 April
  • Publicises a job working with the community to establish a ‘learning centre’ in Hackney and
  • Invites your views on a community conference planned for September/October.

Tabloid Newspaper
First of all a big thank you to the over 90 people who have taken copies of the Hackney Unites/HOPE not hate, community newspaper to distribute: you are wonderful people!

With the Greater London Assembly elections just over three weeks away, we want to alert our communities to the threat of the BNP retaining a seat on the GLA if there is a low turnout. If you have offered to deliver them and have not yet received your allocation, please email HackneyUnites@btinternet.com. There is still time to volunteer if you have not already done so. Please visit: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/97TLDLJ and register to help out.

We are still planning a mass distribution of papers on Saturday 14th, but will email the details separately. Thanks again to everyone for their help.

Holding politicians to account
As well as ensuring the BNP do not get elected, we also want to ensure that any candidates who stand in our constituency of London North East, feel accountable to the community.

On 29 April, we have invited the leading candidates for the constituency to a ‘hustings’ meeting. The Conservative, Green, Labour and Liberal Democrat candidates will be present to answer your questions about their policies if elected. The event is being held at the Arcola Theatre Ashwin Street, from 7pm to 9pm and we are asking people to register in advance so that we can estimate numbers: http://glahustings.eventbrite.com/

An exciting job opportunity
As unemployment (and particularly youth unemployment) soars, Hackney Unites are proud to be working with the TSSA union on a ‘community learning project’. The project aims to work with local employers and trade unions to establish a community learning centre where people can acquire skills for life, or to get or advance at work. The TSSA is currently recruiting a part-time community learning organiser,

The job advert states: ‘The job: Learning Organiser - Community – Part Time (21 hours a week) fixed term contract until 31st March 2013 (subject to confirmation of continuation of funding this contract may be extended for a further one year)
You will play a crucial role as part of the team delivering TSSA’s Union Learning Fund project. You will identify, plan and pursue community learning organising opportunities within local communities. You will work with, coach and train Union Learning Representatives, TSSA Organisers and Community learning Champions. You will set up and support a pilot learning centre in Hackney or/and another specified area for joint use by workers and local people with an aim of increasing the engagement, and the diversity, of members and non-members in learning and the union’

Anyone who wishes to find out more about this role, what it will entail, what skills are required and gain support with the application process, may wish to attend a briefing session on Friday 13th April at 2pm to be held at Hackney CVS, 84 Springfield House, 5 Tyssen Street, London E8 2LY. To register email to  vacancies@tssa.org.uk.

Celebrate Hackney
One of Hackney Unites early successes was the Celebrate Hackney community conference held in 2010. Over 400 people attended, there were 30 workshops/seminar sessions, and over 30 groups participated by having a stall in an ‘information zone’.

We are putting plans together for a second community conference to be held in September or October this year. The idea is to bring our diverse communities together, share our experience, have some informal discussions, eat some good food, and make some new connections. We also hope to provide a number of taster training sessions in community organising techniques and to look at the changes to the voluntary sector that are currently taking place. We would like to know your views. If you are interested, please complete the following survey:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/XZK3VGQ

Please forward this email on to everyone and anyone within our communities in Hackney who you think may wish to support this initiative.

Hackney Unites is a coalition for social justice, if you are not already on our mailing list, you can sign up on-line (http://eepurl.com/bPJDH)  to receive regular updates.

Will you give an hour for Hackney?‏

HOPE Not Hate
Our Target is to distribute 50,000 copies of the newspaper before Sunday 29 AprilDear Supporter,
With the election on 3 May we have an opportunity to put an additional nail in the BNP's coffin. Four years ago their candidate won a seat on the Greater London Authority because in the proportional representation system of voting they need just 5% of votes cast to 'win'.
Four years ago the BNP were riding high and believed they were on the brink of breaking into mainstream politics. A lot has changed in four years but the BNP believe they can retain the GLA seat and are throwing all their efforts into achieving this. We know exactly what we must do to stop them. We need to get decent people across London to vote for other parties.
That's why I am asking for your help.
HOPE not hate has teamed up with local community group Hackney Unites, to produce a tabloid community newspaper. It is anti-BNP, demands that local politicians make themselves accountable to the community they serve and it promotes a vision of Hackney where communities co-operate. It challenges the BNP and addresses the issues of alienation and political disengagement which the BNP so cynically exploit.
The front page publicises a hustings meeting where the community can put questions directly to the four leading candidates in the London North East constituency. This hustings will take place on Sunday 29 April at 7pm at the Arcola Theatre.
Our Target is to distribute 50,000 copies of the newspaper before that meeting.
We already have pledges to distribute nearly 30,000 copies door-to-door across the borough, but we need an additional 100 supporters from Hackney to dedicate one hour to distribute 200 copies each (or more if you have the time).
Will you take one hour to help distribute these papers?
If you can help then sign up here:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/97TLDLJ
or send an email to: hackneyunites@btinternet.com
The papers can be distributed door-to-door (we will allocate you a street or two near where you live) and they can also be distributed through community outlets, such as shops and workplaces. In fact anywhere where people gather. We are also planning a mass distribution on Saturday 14 April (details to follow).
None of us want to wake up on the 4 May to hear that on a low turnout the BNP have retained a seat on the GLA. That's why we are asking you to give one hour of your time to ensure we mobilise a massive anti-BNP vote in Hackney. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/97TLDLJ
Hackney has a vibrant, multicultural society. Let’s stop the racist BNP from getting elected.
Thanks
